Description:

Antique Eight Day Longcase / Grandfather Clock by Joseph Maddock, Tarporley

This is a beautiful oak and mahogany cross-banded long case clock. It has an eight-day movement on a painted face.

If we start with the hood, this has swan necks with arched molded cornice and super turned pateras. The hood door is flanked by 'book end' columns, which have been nicely inlaid with stinging. To the rear of the hood are straight back slats with reeded detailing to the edge. The hood door is also nicely veneered in mahogany and above the hood door there are some super inlays, which set the hood off beautifully.

Moving down to the trunk, the shaped door cross banded in mahogany and is then flanked by 'book end' columns. Above and below the door and columns there are some lovely inlays. Just below the door is a lovely inlaid applied panel then above the door are further inlaid details which sets the clock off beautifully.

The base has a lovely applied panel which is cross-banded in mahogany. The front corner to the base is also nicely flanked with book end columns. The base is raised on bracket feet.

The eight-day movement with makers name of 'Josh Maddock, Tarporley', is rack striking and chimes out the hours on a single bell. It also has a painted dial, subsidiary second and date aperture. The four corners are beautifully adorned with lovely country cottage and church scenes.

There is there Joseph Maddock of Tarporley listed in ‘Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Volume 2 by Brian Loomes' :
