Description:

Antique Eight Day Longcase / Grandfather Clock by Adams, Middlewich

This is a lovely 8-Day oak and mahogany longcase clock which is in superb condition and is exceptionally detailed.

If we start with the hood, this has swan necks which are incorporated into a beautifully shaped pediment. Pretty reeded columns which terminate in brass capitals flank the hood door. The door is mahogany veneered and has a pretty little brass knob. Above the hood door is nicely cross banded in mahogany and inlaid with stringing.

If we then move down to the trunk it has a lovely fully length door cross banded in mahogany. Above the door is beautifully inlaid with diamond banding on a background of mahogany. The door is then flanked by square reeded columns which have been nicely inlaid with stringing.

Finally the base has is a shaped applied panel which is nicely cross banded in mahogany and is raised on lovely ogee bracket feet.

The dial with maker’s name of 'Adams, Middlewich', has the four corners adorned with very rare and unusual oriental scenes which have been created in lovely yellow and red colours with a decorative edge of gold leaf. The dial is set out with Roman Numerals with small Arabic Numerals above at the quarter hours. There are subsidiary second and date dials. The dial also has the most wonderful fretted fingers.

The movement is eight day duration and is rack striking on a single bell.

There are two 'Adams, Middlewich' listed in 'Clockmakers of Cheshire by Keith Applyby':
