Description:

Longcase Clock with Centre Date Calendar by Birchall & Son, Warrington

This is a majestic oak and mahogany longcase clock which is rare having a centre date calendar.

If we start with the hood, this has mahogany swan necks, which have lovely brass pateras. Lovely reeded columns which terminate in brass capitals flank the hood door. The door also has a very pretty little brass knob. The top is finished with three superb turned finials. Below the swan necks there is a wonderful painted panel.

If we then move down to the trunk this has a lovely shaped full length door, which has been nicely cross banded in mahogany. The door has the most pretty diamond key hole which is sets the door off beautifully. The door is then flanked by quarter reeded columns.

The base has a lovely shaped applied panel which is nicely cross banded in mahogany. This is flanked by chamfered reeded corners. The base is then raised on pretty shaped ogee bracket feet.

The dial with maker’s name of Birchall & Son, Warrington, has the four corners adorned with beautiful delicate flowers which have been created in superb colors. The eight-day movement is rack striking and chimes out the hours on a single bell and has the superb feature of a centre date calendar. Birchall & Son, Warrington is listed in ‘Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World Volume 1 by G.H. Ballie’:
