Antique Eight Day 5-Pillar Movement MUSICAL Longcase / Grandfather Clock on 8 BELLS : Thos. Binch, Mansfield
This is a truly exquisite inlaid mahogany long case clock. It has an eight-day Five Pillar movement on an arch dial and chimes on 8 Bells on each quarter hour. The clock also has Strike / Silent facility.
If we start with the hood, this has a pagoda top which is finished with mahogany turned urn finials and a chequer-strung oval panel over satinwood pilasters and arch banding. The hood door is flanked by broadening Corinthian columns with brass capitals. To the rear of the hood are straight back slats. The on either side of the hood are shaped panels with brass fretwork which allows the sound to attenuate.
Moving down to the trunk, the shaped door is beautifully chevron-inlaid and satinwood banded which looks stunning. This is flanked by canted corners which have also been chevron-inlaid.
The base matches the trunk being chevron-inlaid and flanked by canted corners which have also been chevron-inlaid. The base is raised on splayed bracket feet.
The arched dial has a silvered chapter ring having Roman numerals with small Arabic numerals above and foliate divisions between the numerals, there is an outer minute track and inner quarter-hour track. The canter of the dial has a foliate engraving with subsidiary seconds dial. Below this there is a silvered oval cartouche engrave 'Thos. Binch, Mansfield'. The four corners are adorned with mask-centre cast baroque spandrels. The arch incorporates the Strike / Silent facility.
The five- pillar eight-day movement is rack striking on a bell and quarter-chiming on eight further bells. The chimes are such that a quarter of the Cambridge tune is chimed on the quarter past, half at half past and three quarters at quarter to, then the full tune is chimed on the hour.
The clock has three superb brass cased weights.
